People-place relationships have become an important issue in recent decades. Although there are numerous exciting studies have examined the factors influencing place bonding, the mechanism of such bonding remains undetermined. Many researchers believe that bonding can be detected only after a place becomes inaccessible (displaced/disrupted). This study attempts understand the changes in place bonding that occur after a place is rebuilt. Using a hypothetical scenario, changes in place bonding were compared before and following a place renewal project. The results demonstrated that when people have stronger place bonding, their bonding declines considerably after a place is rebuilt, regardless of whether it is rebuilt better or worse than the original. Moreover, individuals with weaker bonding would have their bonding increased. The results of this study provide a new means to understand the mechanisms of place disruption, and contribute to urban place planning and management. |
