Ever since the publication of Our Common Future, sustainable development has been accepted internationally as an important concept to resolve environmental problems for the symbiosis between natural environment and human society. Sustainable urban development has also become an important local action for global sustainability. Sustainability indicators can be used to describe and measure the trends of urban development. After discussing the concept, scope, and indicator of sustainable city, this paper uses Taipei as a case study to measure its sustainability. On the basis of natural processes and evolving urban development, the approach of marching Taipei toward a sustainable city is defined as: Reinforcing Taipei metropolis' life support system via it's vigorous economy for enhancing its urban productivity and quality of life to make Taipei a national capital with characteristics of nature and culture. From view point of holistic ecological economic system, the interrelationships between Taipei's life support services (e.q. nature, agriculture, and water), urban product, and environmental management are assessed to develop the indicator system of urban sustainability. There are 80 indicators which can be used to diagnose Taipei's sustainability. These indicators are further aggregated into ten indicators for general public and evaluated by signal lights (red, green, yellow). |
