Social support network has been a central notion of prevention and recovery of substance abuse issues while systematic evidence-based research is relatively limited in Taiwan. This study was to explore the perceived social support network in 97 male with drug addiction experiences and were incarcerated in a correctional institution. Conducted by social network map and questionnaires, this study evaluated the structure and functions of their social support network, resources of sobriety from their network members, and whether the professional human service persons such as social workers were playing a role in the social support network. Findings show their size of social network is 8.28 persons on average, including mostly families and relatives but rarely professional human service persons. Relatively lower percentage of people reported reciprocal relationship. Around 30% of the network members frequently provide assistance to stay clean. Also, the number of friends and professional helpers were found to relate the function of staying clean. Implications for future research are discussed. |
