The Golden Lotus ended with a poem stating, '' Long living was the reward for Lou and Wu’s virtuousness;/Premature death was a result of Pan and Chunmei’s promiscuousness./Not only Pan deserved her own karma,/But she brought ruin and everlasting infamy upon herself by posterity,” to contrast the life of Pan Jinlian, Li Pinger and Chunmei. Having affirming Wu's ''virtuousness'' and ''chastity'', The Golden Lotus also suggested Wu Yueliang's seventy years old long-living lifespan was the reward for her virtue, it was also evidentually showing the author's requirements and expectations for women’s behaviors. In this paper, the related poems from the Golden Lotus were cited and studeid to illurtate the author’s exepression of such values via the role of Wu Yueliang being the rightuous wife with the legal “right” and “responsibility.” |
