The main duties of a museum include exhibition, collection, research and education, but our rapidly changing times call for constant adjustments and activities such as information, announcements, traveling exhibits and other events. Thus the modern museum has developed direct means of interaction with the public that involve more than the traditional methods of display, collection, research and education as a base. The museum must also rely on other areas such as more detailed explanations by computer guide terminals in order to stimulate greater interest in science and technology among the public. Visitors should have access to full and clear information about science and technology that will provide entertainment, education and personal enrichment in their lives. Now, with the incredibly rapid change that is taking place in information technology and communications technology, we must broaden our focus beyond simple written, sound and image communications to provide information in multi-media and a variety of interfaces. Thus the development of new technologies leads to changes in the way computer guide terminals function and the overall educational environment in the museum. This article takes a look at the National Science and Technology Museum and its plans to apply technological advances in areas such as computer guides and educational activities. |
