The First Congress of the Guomindang (GMD) in January 1924 endorsed the admission of 26 members of Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including Mao Zedong, into its party for supporting GMD's Northern Expedition. In GMD, Mao Zedong was elected an alternate member of the Central Executive Committee (CEC), and promoted to several important positions, such as the acting Minister of the Propaganda Department, fostering his revolutionary thoughts. This essay tries to delve into the process of Mao's attendance at the GMD First Congress, and examines why and how he was elected as an alternate CEC member. |
