To determine aberrant lymphocyte activation in chronic schizophrenia, twenty-one cases were enrolled in this study. Lymphocyte activation was evaluated by the levels of soluble interleukin-2 receptors (sIL-2R) which. were determined by ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay). After one-month's neuroleptics treatment, increased serum levels (1614.2 ± 154.2 U/ml) of sIL-2R were statistically different (F=17.5; df=2,17; p<0.0001) to these of acute episodes (927.5 ± 124.6 U/ml) and normal controls (891.8 ± 58.7 U/ml). Nevertheless, there were no significant difference (p=0.80) of serum levels between acute episodes and normal controls in spite of higher levels of the former. On the other hand, these change of levels of sIL-2R showed no relation to the improvement of clinical status [either positive scale (r=0.41; p=0.72) or negative scale (r=0.18; p=0.46)]. The present study suggested the change of sIL-2R in serum levels could not be a predictor of the improvement of clinical status and the partial activation of lymphocyte may occur in Chinese chronic schizophrenic patients who were in acute episodes. Furthermore, there were significant stimulating effect of the neuroleptics on sIL-2R concentrations. |
