The humoral factors involved in Behcet's disease were studied in patients during disease activity and after activity subsided. Anticardiolipin antibodies with IgG, IgM and IgA isotypes and soluble interleukin-6 were measured in serum samples from 15 patients and 15 healthy subjects. Elevated levels of IgG and IgM isotypes, not IgA isotype, anticardiolipin antibodies were found in the patient group, and levels dropped after disease activity subsided. The neurological involvement, not other manifestations, was found to be significantly associated with the raised aCL antibodies. In addition interleukin-6 levels were also elevated in the patient group, which may contribute to the production of anticardiolipin antibodies. In conclusion, anticardiolipin antibodies and interleukin-6 may be involved in systemic immune responses of patients with Behcet's disease. Serial measurements of anticardiolipin antibodies would be useful in evaluating disease activity. |
