From June, 1983 to October, 1984, 100 consecutive patients with arthritis were received needle aspiration of joint fluids. All synovial fluids (SF) were examined with light microscope and polarized microscope for the crystal, particularly the monosodium urate (MSU) and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal. The alizarin red S stain was used as a screen test to detect calciumcontained crystals in SF. Looking for the tiny CPPD or apatite crystals, electron microscopic (EM) study of SF was done in some cases. In our study, MSU crystals was found in 37 SF, CPPD in 3, and apatite in 1. No CPPD or apatite crystal appeared in SF of other joint diseases, for instance, rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Our result disclosed that the gouty arthritis seems quite common in Chinese, whereas CPPD or apatite- related arthropathy seems uncommon when compare to the western reports. |
