Fibroblast proliferation and/or collagen overproduction are the central biologic process in certain chronic inflammatory disease characterized by fibrosis, such as scleroderma, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cirrhosis of the liver and interstitial nephritis. Recent investigation showed that fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis can be modulated by mononuclear cell system. Under certain condition, the lymphocyte- monocyte- macrophage were activated to secrete different soluble factors that stimulate or suppress the proliferation of fibroblast and collagen synthesis. Fibroblast also play an active role in the interaction between monuclear cell system by secreting chemoattractants and interferon. Thus, following an inflammatory stimulation, the immune response occurred between fibroblast and immune cells in a complicated, bidirectional rather than uni- directional way. |
