Thesis of practice research has been among the requirements of most art and design graduate schools in Taiwan as well as other countries. However, the art graduate students usually feel it difficult to conduct and write such research thesis. The possible reason for this situation may be their inadequacy in understanding “why” and “how” to conduct and write such kind of thesis. Therefore, through theoretical analysis, this article attempts to deal with four aspects: (a) the reasons for doing art practice research, (b) the characteristics of current art practice research, (c) the structure and variation of practice-led research thesis, and (d) the way to write art practice-led research thesis. Concerning the reasons, this article interprets practice research as a important current trend, well-conducted research as profitable to the enhancement of thinking, and promoting academic legitimacy of art practice. The characteristics of such research involves being ineffable and impossibility of verification, performative research paradigm, practice-led research orientation, as well as the importance of process and knowledge production. The thesis structure includes five sections (introduction, situating concepts, practical contexts, researcher’s creations, and conclusion) and their variations. The writing of thesis involves finding suitable research method, understanding the contents of thesis, applying the writing models of practice-led research (context model, commentary model, hybrid-connective model, research-question model), and reflection on the four models. In conclusion, the research-question model is proposed as the first step better to integrate practice with theory. In writing, the merit of hybrid-connective model is profitable to merging the creator-researcher’s subjective and objective perspectives. |
