This paper aims to explore the Baroque pictures in Marquis de Sade’s novels. Although Sade was not a writer of the Baroque, the impacts of the Baroque style can still be traced in his works. In fact, Baroque aesthetics abounded in his texts. Pictures not only lie at the core of Sade’s erotic stories but also figure predominantly in classicism. With an emphasis on employing the most fantastic language, Sade created striking visual effects that ignited the recreation of Baroque-like movement and excess. As a result, his pictures presented unprecedented visual effects and erotic scenarios. By means of various body combinations and constant changes of different postures, Sade experimented with the ultimate ecstasy not yet realized and experienced by mortals. Playing a pivotal role in his concept of aesthetics, the dialectic between body combinations and philosophical discourse thus unleashes the novels’ potentials. Indeed, Sade’s novels can be seen as not only the writing of transgression but also the inscription of pictures. |
