The order of mass liturgy is the key for understanding the music of masses. Besides gaining a general understanding through text sources, it is also necessary to learn from investigating this music as mass is actually celebrated in churches. This essay analyzes the order of mass on the basis of a representative sample of 12 masses recorded on site in Austria. The recordings were transferred from tape to CD-R, with track divisions decided on the basis of the mass order and content. The CD-Rs may be played continuously to the end or selectively, in any order. Each mass's content is presented in a sequential chart that provides the name of each item or step, timings, and other details, such as whether an item is sung or recited, whether the language used is German or Latin, and so on. Finally, the author provides a detailed Chinese translation of the invariant parts of the lyrics, including the clergymen's prayers, together with explanations. The sequential charts of the masses, which include that of the Requiem Mass, conclude the exploration of mass liturgy and music, and they may serve as a detailed reference. |
