The value of collaboration is often felt in the search for new ideas and strategies among companies who lack the resources to innovate by themselves. Museum systems, effectively a form of collaboration between museums, could be seen as one way of lessening the pressure on individual institutions. However, this is a strategy which has an impact on the way museums are managed. This article examines examples of museum systems, including the Renaissance in the Regions project, the Smithsonian Institution, National Museums Liverpool, Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust and museum systems in Italy. It also examines existing cases in Taiwan. The article suggests that the Council for Cultural Affairs should play a vital role in setting up new systems in Taiwan. Regional hubs should be identified and granted funding. Moreover, a designation scheme should be set up whereby museums with important collections can also be treated as national museums and play the role of regional hub. |
