Public service has been one of the most important missions of a museum ever since it opened to the public. The role of better serving the public has become the most important factor in running a museum. In order to accomplish this critical mission, museums have been trying to increase the collections' use, not only to serve more people, but also to develop more service items. Therefore, a museum's space has to be modified or changed to cope with this new strategy of collection service. To set up a public learning center such as study rooms, public laboratories and the visible storage, etc. has become one of the most important issue in the space planning of modern museums. Although most museums in Taiwan were built within the last two decades, their space planning for the collections was concerned mainly of their preservation and maintenance or the backup of research, exhibition and education. In other words, the space for the collection's public services has not put into consideration in their planning stage. Fortunately, there are certain amounts of annual government budget for the museums to promote their quality of public services. It is hoped that this discussion could help the museums in Taiwan to realize that the space planning is the key for the better public service of museum collections. |
