Ecological turn has become an important trend in inter-religious dialogue. This paper offers an analysis on the ecological turn in Christian-Confucian dialogue emerging in the Chinese speaking world. Based on this analysis, it further attempts to consider the prospect of the ecological turn of Buddhist-Christian dialogue. The paper starts with a survey of the major approaches in Christian ecological theology, with a view to present the diversity of Christian ecological theology as well as its potential for engaging in dialogue with various religions. Afterwards, it reviews the Confucian resources for ecological ethics and attempts to find out the contact points in the dialogue with Christianity. This paper further argues that the ecological turn in Christian-Confucian dialogue does not only enhance the mutual understanding between Christianity and Confucianism but also contributes to the development of ecological ethics. Based on its analysis of the presupposition, positive contribution and limitation in the ecological turn in Christian-Confucian dialogue, this paper concludes with a discussion on the possibility, desirability and potential for an ecological turn in Buddhist-Christian dialogue, together with a reflection on the direction of inter-religious dialogue in general. |
