Any theories about religion have displayed certain understanding of the concept of Religion. Any religious traditions in the past and present have also manifested various dimensions of it. This paper suggests that the concept of Religion can be taken as an Ideal as the regulative principle and functional unity to direct the development of any models of religious studies, which are subject to be modified when encountering further more religious phenomenon. This pattern can be further illustrated in light of the insight of Confucian proposition of “the Li is one but its manifestations are many (理一分殊 li-yi-fen-shu) ,” which can in turn serve as a methodological principle of religious studies. |
