The Chinese Society and Culture' is one of the most important areas in the selected readings listed by the Chinese language and literature credited programs, departments, and graduate schools of Ministry of Education. 'The Chinese Society and Culture' is also one of the required subjects to be tested for the recognition pedagogy examination for the national “Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language Proficiency Certificate” examination. It is thus obvious that 'The Chinese Society and Culture' is a subject of critical importance in the field of teaching the Chinese language and literature. In view of the almost 50 million overseas Chinese populations at present, acknowledging this subject contributes to not only the Chinese education for the children of the overseas Chinese but also the foreigners' Chinese acquisition. The ultimate purpose of the language education should return to the culture, which is inseparable from the language. Both the Chinese descendents or foreigners understanding the Chinese culture and the Chinese culture as derived from the merge between the Chinese society and the local nationals and cultures through alternation of generations should be the primarily concerned dimension by hard-working students. This article uses literature analysis to analyze Taiwan's teaching of 'The Chinese Society and Culture' and contrasts the study of The Compilation of the Course Outline at Departments/Graduate Schools of the Chinese language Teaching, as developed by more than 30 Chinese teachers from National Taiwan Normal University, with the Chinese Language Teaching Proficiency Certificate examination, followed by putting forward suggestions. It is expected that this article would give some advice on the curriculum outline and design of 'The Chinese Society and Culture' in today's Taiwan and increase the attention from more professionals in the same realm. |
