The Qing Dynasty published two novels about Mulan joining the army –“Bei wei qi shi gui xiao lie zhuan”(北魏奇史閨孝烈傳) and “Zhong xiao yong lie qi nyu zhuan”(忠孝勇烈奇女傳). However, related studies have been rare. Therefore, the present paper uses the fundamental mode of narration to discuss the story of Mulan joining the army. The paper starts with the specific angles from which the story develops. Then it elaborates on the “special woman and special historical event” narrative pattern, gradually developed in novels from “Mulan Poem”(木蘭詩) to ' Suitang Yanyi '(隋唐演義). Then, this paper continues to illustrate how these two novels, going beyond a fixed and popular heroic writing pattern, provide another new mode of narration, the “unique heroine,” and eventually help construct “Mulan” as a “zhong xiao yong lie”(忠孝勇烈) cultural paradigm. |
