The aim of this paper is to discuss a specific quotation from Cheng Yan-zeng(程炎震) in Yu Jia Xi's(余嘉錫) Note and Commentary on Shi Stuo Xin Yu(《世說新語籤疏》). In the third chapter of the 'Government Affair', it mentions the visits of Wang Mong(王濛), Liu Yan(劉恢) and Zhi Dun(支遁), to General He Chong (何驃騎何充). Cheng proposed that one of the visitor might be Zhu Fa-qian(竺法潛) Master Shen (深公), instead of Zhi Dun(支遁) Master Lin(林公). Yu and other authors of Shi Shuo Xin Yu accepted Cheng's proposal. Base on historical texts we found that Cheng has ignored the status and the relationship between He Chong and Zhu Fa-qian. He did know Zhi Dun. There are closer relationship between Zhi and Wang or Liu than Zhu Fa-qian. We conclude that Cheng's point of view might not be correct, and suggest the original point be maintained. |
