Chinese characters have their long history of development. In order to understand Chinese characters, one must have knowledge of their original forms, developments and usages in different historical stages. One's ability to trace the developments of the characters guarantees an objective analysis of the characters. In this article, by using concrete examples of selective characters, the author aims to illustrate how understanding the development of Chinese characters helps students grasp each character's strokes, variant forms, and stroke order in kaishu (楷書 standard handwriting style) writing. The study of character development is undoubtedly a scientific method we should follow in re-evaluating Chinese characters. |
