The fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Tunghai University and the Department of Chinese is an occasion to cherish the memory of the late Professor Fang Shih-tuo for his dedication to research and education and the lasting exemplar he sets. The paper is a review of his unpublished work entitled Metrical Patterns of Tang Poems based on his lecture notes. My dual purpose is first to prevent the unpublished manuscript from falling into oblivion and second to introduce through the book his unassuming scholarship, his inquisitive mind, his approachable dimension, and his insistence on empirical evidence as well as, as revealed in the feature of the book, his insight and contribution to the studies on the metrical patterns of Tang poems. The paper will also touch on the grouping of the last three characters of a line and fill a gap in my late mentor's work on the basis of the rhythmic patterns and the formation of the scheme of the last three characters. |
