In Taiwan, most hospitals use local codes to report their laboratory data. Using the local codes for exchanging the laboratoiy data makes different systems unable to understand and reuse the exchanged data. It is critical to standardize the laboratory tests. Since the National Health Insurance (NHI) codes are used for insurance claim, they are adopted by most hospitals. For this reason, NHI codes are the best choice as an intermediate tool for mapping local codes into the LONIC ones. The authors of this paper developed a method for mapping NHI codes for laboratory tests into the corresponding LONIC codes, and have built up a NHI-LOINC mapping database. Since most professionals from a hospital are familiar with NHI codes, the database can be used for facilitating the mapping process in which the professionals map their hospital local codes into the corresponding LONIC codes through the NHI-LOINC mapping database. As such, the LOINC codes can be quickly adopted by the local hospitals and laboratory centers. Consequently the LOINC can become a standard of laboratory information in Taiwan. |
