Food and Drug Administration was informed by Taitung Health Bureau of 7 cases of suspected foodborne disease in Taitung County in June 2015. A total of 102 consumers had symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea with abdominal cramps. The restaurants in Ludao Township were asked to stop the supply of raw oyster since 1^(st) July, then no further informed cases. Forty three samples including 2 oysters, other foods and 22 environmental samples were screened for pathogenic bacteria and enteric viruses. Two oyster samples were found contaminated with norovirus. Seventeen human specimens were also collected and ten were positive for norovirus. According to epidemiological investigation, the correlation between foodborne disease outbreaks and oyster is significant. The investigation concluded that the oyster contaminated by norovirus was the etiological agent that should be destroyed according to the Act Governing Food Sanitation. |
