Academic interest in the Hanshu 漢書 greatly flourished during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, becoming a feature of Southern Dynasties historiography. At the beginning of the Liang Dynasty, a Buddhist monk travelled from northern to southern China, bringing with him a handwritten manuscript. It is said that this was a manuscript of the Hanshu. This paper attempts to discuss this manuscript, first investigating the academic background to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, including differences in the period's historical works, codification of bibliographies, and collections of books. Second, attention is given to the dissemination, collation and content of the Hanshu manuscript. This study concludes with an analysis of studies of the Hanshu made before and after the appearance of the Hanshu manuscript in southern China. In short, this research aims to clarify understanding of the academic environment and development of historiography during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. |
