Yayao 雅瑤, a sub-dialect of Yue 粵is distinguished from the other languages of the world by its complete lack of bilabial obstruent initials. This article discusses the process by which Yayao has lost its bilabial obstruent initials and the phonetic motivation for this. The aspirated feature of obstruent initials in Yayao can be viewed as having friction strong enough to ignite a series of phonetic changes that culminate in the loss of bilabial obstruent initials (p-, p'-), dental obstruent initials (t-, t'-) and velar obstruent initial (k'-). |
