There are deep cultural traditions of male-male sexuality and male homoerotic literature in China. During the Six dynasties, male-male sexuality was a symbol of aesthetic style. However, by late imperial China it had become an important theme in humorous literature. In the Qing dynasty, jokes about male-male sexuality reflected subtle changes in gender consciousness, moral conceptions and popular cultural values. This paper explores the representation of gender consciousness and moral conceptions in Qing dynasty jokes about male-male sexuality. |
