The construction and development of a library is closely related with the needs of our society and the available information technologies. For most libraries, when years passed after they had been built, library managers may have to consider remodeling and interior renovation to meet the new space needs for installing high-technology facilities, or to develop a friendly environment for library users so as to commit to the trends of the new information era. For some institutions, they might even take the solution of building a new library to expand their services or to solve the space problem. While considering incorporating new information technology into library services, in addition, providing suitable facilities and a wealth of information resources for library users, we should understand that the planning and workflow of doing so now are far more complicated than before. Through literature review and visits of new digital libraries, the author tried to describe the transformation of the use of library space in accommodation to the development trends toward a high-technology information commons and, to shape a sound strategic planning and the associated management considerations for the construction of a high-technology and information-rich library. It is hoped that there will be more of such great scale renovation or high-technology libraries initiated in Taiwan in the near future to benefit citizens and university communities in long term. |
