Periodicals are one of the important channels for publishing research in any field. Through observation and analysis of journal articles, we can glimpse a general picture of the research into a subject and the trends in its development. Chinese Studies, a Taiwanese journal first published in 1983, is locally an important journal of the humanities as well as an internationally-renowned Sinological periodical. It covers categories of research including Chinese literature, history, and philosophy. Focusing on the 408 history articles in the 55 issues of Chinese Studies published between 1983 and 2008, this paper uses bibliometric methods to analyze research themes, author’s gender and region, language, type of citation used, and use of charts and tables, in order to get an idea of the trends in historical studies over the past 26 years, the subjects in which scholars have been interested, and the features of their research methods. The result of this research shows that the majority of articles published in Chinese Studies fall into the history category. The historical periods most covered are the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the major specialism are of intellectual and academic history. Most of the articles were published in Chinese, included footnotes and a bibliography, but made infrequent use of charts or tables. Almost all of the articles were written by a single author, and the majority of authors were male, with both local and international scholars represented. |
