When an individual is diagnosed as suffering cancer, his or her social network may adapt new ways of expressing sympathy and caring. Medical social worker works in medical setting to help cancer patients often uses casework and group work skill. This article describes supporting group of breast cancer in cancer center experienced living with the disease. The targets of supporting group included informative, emotional and existential meanings dimensions. The duration of group interaction was about 3 months, once a week. Each meeting was leaded by one psychiatrist (leader), one senior social worker (co-leader) and one junior social worker (observer). One month after group meeting ended, all of members were invited to participate ”mother's home meeting”. It is interaction as social support to the women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. It would be encouraged to build up self-help group to enhance their social supporting system. |
