This is a fildwork report about a Hakka Weilong House, Jieyangtang, which is located in Meizhou, Guangdong. The author discovered this Hakka house in 2006 and visited the Jieyangtang seven times in the last eight years. He has witnessed the transformation of the Hakka building from a neglected old house to a recognized piece of cultural heritage. The Jieyangtang was built by Liang Biru, a self-made tycoon in British Malaya, who built the gorgeous house in his hometown in the late nineteenth century to show off his wealth and fame. Unfortunately, Liang’s family was purged and the building was conficated and partly damaged during the People’s Republic, especially in the Cultural Revolution in the mid-1960s. The fildwork was of mutual benefit to both the author/researcher and the Liang’s family, as the former received considerable original research materials, while the latter became more familiar with their glorious family history. |
