Purpose: This paper explores the role of sustainable operations management (SOM) in achieving competitiveness. The drivers for SOM are discussed with examples from top performers in SOM. These top performers are those that should be benchmarked to achieve triple bottom line as defined in the paper.Methodology/Approach: The paper presents some frameworks that could be used as a guide in developing SOM but most importantly, it emphasizes the involvement of stakeholders in environmental decision making, the need to develop enabling conditions by providing the right environment and adapting organizational culture and structure, and also the need to emphasize value creation, metrics and results.Practical Implications: Organizations that respond proactively to SOM and take a cradle-to-grave approach of their products and services have the opportunity to reap benefits from the emerging green market. Sustainability is the current trend and it should last as long as it can since earth's resources are limited and are often nonreplenishable.Originality/Value: Three strategic approaches, namely, business-society relationship management, sustainable product concept design and realization, and lean and Six Sigma operations, are developed in this paper that emphasize triple bottom line to the organization by enhancing the organization's ability to contribute in achieving social and economic development while helping to protect the environment. |
