Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, and impaired physical function. The causes of sarcopenia are multifactorial, including senescence, disuse, and altered metabolic and immune systems. The consequences of sarcopenia include poor functional status, falls and mortality. Currently there are several definitions and diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia from different international consensus conferences. Clinically there are several screen strategies for sarcopenia. Progressive resistance training and nutritional intervention are beneficial to improve skeletal muscle strength and physical activity in the elderly. This review introduces the pathophysiology, definition, prevalence, screen tools and appropriate intervention of sarcopenia. |
