Research revealed that interpersonal attributes were the most important indicator of the quality of nursing care when technical competence was assumed. How patients described the nurses who provided good quality nursing care therefore deserved study. The aim of this study was to explore good nurse traits from the perspective of patients for whom they cared. A questionnaire including 33 good nurse trait descriptors was used to collect data. Four hundred seventy two patients with chronic diseases were asked to circle as many traits as they thought were important. Ten traits were circled by more than 50% of the patients. Among those traits, “being patient” was the most important (67.1%) and both “being responsible” and “being attentive/cautious” followed closely behind (65.6%). Patience and emotion and their interaction, as well as the differentiation of responsibility and accountability were discussed. The results of this study have implications for nurses when they try to be more self-aware and self-reflective in providing a high quality of nursing care. |
