This article discusses the therapeutic regimen and nursing care process for a 37-year-old unmarried woman with terminal lung cancer who was under the author ’s care from September 15 to September 20, 2006. The Gordon's 11 -point functional health assessment chart was used as a tool for evaluating the patient’s condition. Through discussion, observation, listening, physical examination, and other objective data, the author discovered the patient's inclination to end her life. The patient had a poor understanding of her medical condition, a sense of hopelessness, and various physical problems including nausea. The author, on her own initiative, used a caring attitude to provide medical information that would help the patient better understand her current condition and encouraged the patient to have a more positive outlook on life, thus decreasing her wish for death. Aromatherapy was initiated to counter-act the ill-effects of chemotherapy. With the support of her family and the medical staff, the patient was able to make a better adjustment and response to her terminal condition, which resulted in a more positive psychological, physical, and spiritual effect overall. |
