In health care settings, needle injuries have always been a notorious threat to the safety of the nursing staff. Not only do they produce health problems and stress to the nursing staff, but also spent tremendous amount of personnel time, material, and money to resolve this issue. In respect to the environmental health and safety of nursing staff, it is very important for the hospital management to realize the significance of applied quality management, effective problem-solving skills, and reduced work-related injury. This study analyzes the statistics of real needle injury cases by utilizing observation, questionnaires, and meta-analysis. The improvement measures can be found by using PDCA method: 1.Improved design of smaller and lighter needle recycling box. 2. Education and training. 3. Warning sign labeling. 4. Production of needle injury prevention manual. 5. Rearrangement of therapeutic tray. The outcome is the reduction of needle injury cases from 7 cases in 6 months to zero case in 6 months. This study shows by utilizing the above improvement measures, we can effectively reduce the rate of needle injury, subsequently provide nursing staff a safe and healthy workplace. |
