Manganese is widely distributed in nature and it is and essential trace element required for the maintenance of biological function in humans and other animals, but it is harmful to workers who are over exposed to Mn. Biological monitoring of Mn is not mandatory at present in the world, but the cases of chronic manganese intoxication in workers have been reported in Taiwan. Therefore further studies on the effects of Mn exposure on the workers' health is necessary. The concentration of Mn in biologic medium is very low (ng/g), so it can only be detected by instruments with high sensitivity. The purpose of the present study is therefore aiming at developing a simple, rapid and reliable methods to directly measure the concentration of Mn in biological samples. Our preliminary results showed that the matrix effect could be removed by STPF technique and matrix modifiers. The reference method for the biological monitoring of workers exposed to Mn was also proposed in this study. |
