Safety performance is the subsystem of organizational performance. Improving the former will promote the latter. The main purpose of this research is to assess the safety performance in four categories of manufacturing industries in Central Taiwan, and to investigate the differences in safety performance on both organizational and individual factors. The exploratory factor analysis of the safety performance scale resulted in six factors such as safety training, safety equipment, accident investigation and statistics, safety measures, safety organization, and safety management. These factors explained 69.14% of the total variance. Moreover, the internal consistency of the total scale reached a Cronbach α value of .9765. A selfevaluation questionnaire survey was conducted among employees in those industries in 2000. The number of respondents was 524. Significant differences were found in safety performances between various organizational sizes, industries, and safety management staffing. Major differences were found between gender, lessons learned from accidents, and safety training. The organizational factors that influenced the performance may be related to safety structure. And the personal factors that influenced the performance may be connected to spatial visualization, past experiences and behavior modification. |
