The year 2010 sees Taiwan as a society comprised of multiple ethnic groups. The indigenous peoples in Taiwan have been trying to use writing as a way to inherit their unique cultures. Ethnic awareness and self-identity are promoted for student at elementary schools by using books with colorful pictures, simplified texts, and description of traditional stories. This is considered as the best way raise indigenous children’s awareness of their traditional cultures and values, as well as to learn their languages. The Bunun doctor Valis Tanapima was born in Xinyi Township, Nantou County. After her father's death, she decided to inherit Bunun cultures, including its language and life wisdoms, and turn them into the first indigenous picture book--Bunun • Valis. The book attempts show children how to respect cultures from different ethnic groups. First, this paper investigates a series of Bunun • Valis and describes the naming system, myths and legends, rituals, natural environment, and the Bunun elders. We also analyze how Valis Tanapima shapes Bunun as she inherited from her father and how she use the language and pictures to present Bunun culture. Secondly, this paper studies the state of the art for the publication and the future development of picture books on Bunun stories. |
