The relationship between urban design thoughts and urban design profession has become an important research issue in both academic and professional fields. This paper explores the development of contemporary urban design thoughts as well as their influences on the urban design practice in Taiwan. Starting from a critical review of the meaning of urban design and the key concepts of the major urban design thoughts, this paper attempts to classify contemporary urban design thoughts in several major categories in order to compare the contents and the development of these thoughts. Through literature review and our empirical study, this study finds that a new urban design paradigm that encourages multi-discipline cooperation, totality, ecological integrity, diversity, and public involvement is emerging, and the concept of eco-city and sustainable city may serve as a corner stone to build this paradigm. By employing research methods including case studies, questionnaire survey, and interview, the empirical study also identifies the major problems of current urban design practice in Taiwan, and provides operational suggestions for redefining the urban design profession and improving urban design practice in Taiwan. |
