Wars have been detrimental to the spread of religions. This is not only because of the direct casualties inflicted by the wars, but also the horror and hatred induced by the wars which in turn reinforces the circulation of rumors and post-war complications. For example, the international involvement during the war provoked the emotional reaction of nationalism and thus provided the excuse for more violence and damages. It would also aggravate the previous conflict and crack of various kind and take long time to restore original peace and harmony. This article is to narrate the vicissitudes of the Catholics in Taiwan during the 1895 Sino-Japanese War-aftermath. Special attention goes to the legendary and mysterious catechist Zhang Derun. The difficulties of doing research in missionary history in Taiwan are discussed and some historical vacuum is filled in this article. On the surface, wars seemed to be a good opportunity for evangelization. But in fact it always caused many loss of life and properties, and consequently, disadvantageous to the religion which pursues peace. |
