This article describes a young woman with stroke and cerebral venous thrombosis secondary to long-time use of oral contraceptive pills. The patient suddenly suffered from a lack of physical functioning and felt deeply anxious about the unknown progress of her disease, which triggered the author's motivation for probing. The nursing period was from February 3 to 18, 2013. With Gordon's 11 functional health patterns assessment tool, data were collected through interviews, observation, listening, and physical examination. Based on data analysis, the patient's health problems included physical dysfunction, lack of selfcare ability, and anxiety. Through assistance of progressive physical rehabilitation and selfcare skills training, encouragement of self-expression of internal feelings and concerns, provision of comprehensive explanation of disease, and mutual communication, the patient and her family members better understood the disease and its rehabilitation process. The patient gradually recovered physical function and became more capable of self-care and adaptation to daily activity. In recent years, there has been a trend of stroke in the younger generations; therefore, nurses should take relevant courses for promoting the ability to take care of young stroke patients. |
