This article reports a perioperative nursing experience of caring for a prostate cancer patient receiving total prostatectomy via the robotic Da Vinci surgical system combined with vesicoureteral anastomosis. During the nursing period from November 19 to 26, 2013, the author completed an integral assessment with Gordon's 11 functional health patterns assessment tool. Data were collected through patient observation, interview, and medical records review. The three major identified nursing problems were anxiety due to lack of information regarding disease progress and anesthesia during surgery, potential risk of surgical injuries, and lack of knowledge about post-surgical care. During the caring period, the author provided individualized care interventions and relevant patient education. The telephone follow-up and care consults for home care were offered after the patient was discharged with the expectation that the patient could quickly recover and go back to daily activities. |
