The two verbal suffixes -un and -an in Truku Seediq have been analyzed as two distinctive 'focus' markers or 'voice' morphemes. However, careful attention to the interpretation and use of -un and -an reveals that it is problematic to conclude that -un is a Patient Focus whereas -an is a Locative Focus. In addition, previous analyses are insufficient in terms of interpreting their distributions. This paper shows that (i) -un and -an are two distinct voice morphemes that fall under Goal Voice; (ii) their difference is of the degree of transitivity; and (iii) -un has high transitivity and -an has low transitivity. |
