Both linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that rice and millet were domesticated plants available to Proto-Austronesian speakers in Taiwan about 5,000 years ago or earlier. Cultivation of rice is wide-spread among all the Formosan natives and has an uninterrupted history, whereas cultivation of millet is much more restricted in both time and location. The amount of rice and millet in 13 archaeological sites in Tainan, and rice excavated in the other parts of Taiwan are shown in tables. Austronesian cognates for rice and millet are also given in a list. |
