The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of music in decreasing anxiety and stress among urologic surgical patients. The participants were recruited from a hospital in southern Taiwan. A quasi-experimental design was applied. Participants were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups, each with 30 patients. Participants assigned to the experimental group received 60-min of music therapy and regular operative nursing care, and those assigned to the control group received regular operative nursing care. Data were collected before the surgery and the recovery room respectively. The tools of this study included basic data, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Visual Analog Scale for Anxiety (VASA), and the Visual Analog Scale for Pressure (VASP). The results showed that the experimental group had lower scores on the STAI (F = 5.03, p = 0.03), VASA (F = 9.46, p <0.01), and VASP (F = 8.93, p <0.01), indicating that the experimental group had significantly lower anxiety and pressure than the control group. The results of this study provide a reference for nurses when applying music therapy with urologic surgical patients. |
