As Taiwan’s economy has developed, its service sector has grown to account for more than 70 percent of GDP. But while services have become the mainstay of the economy, there is still a lack of adequate surveys and statistics for this sector. This study attempts to map the way for conducting business surveys of Taiwan’s service sector, drawing guidance from survey methods used overseas that match the circumstances of Taiwan’s service industry, and using the business tendency survey approach widely adopted by OECD and EU member countries. As business tendency surveys are qualitative, they are less of a burden to respondents, which means they are likely to elicit a higher ratio of responses and hence deliver fuller and more reliable data. Therefore, this study recommends that Taiwan should develop such surveys as early as possible, so that changes in business conditions throughout the service sector can be identified swiftly and accurately. |
