The world economy has been witnessing the surge in free trade agreement (FTA) since the early 1990s. For catching up the tide, ASEAN announced to establish ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 1992, the only major FTA in the region. After the Financial Crisis, ASEAN evoked to strengthen the cooperation with other East Asian countries and started showing a strong interest in FTAs including ASEAN +3, ASEAN +1, Japan-ASEAN, Korea-ASEAN, and East Asian FTA. But Taiwan has no opportunities to participate in consultations, except East Asian FTA, and could be driven out of the integration and immersed in marginalization. In light of strong interest in FTAs by East Asian economies, Taiwan has to pay attention to the development of regional economic integration in East Asia and deploys the strategies. |
