This article summarizes the current state of the Chinese banking industry and foreign banks’ development in China, and assesses the prospects for Taiwan’s banks in China. The five years following China's WTO entry at the end of 2001 are expected to see great changes in China's banking system. However, Taiwan’s banks face restrictions under PRC banking law that will hinder their taking full advantage of the new opportunities. Not being permitted to establish branches until 2004 or to manage RMB business until 2007, they will not be able to keep up with the development of other foreign banks. Apart from needing to make double the effort to develop their business in China, they should concentrate on extracting the optimum benefit from their competitive advantages in trade and SME financing. |
