Fragrance', the most recent works by Wang Anyi in 2011, describe the story of the rise and fall of Shanghai gentry’s family of the late Ming period as the warp and the family of women accompanied with embroidery craft in traditional Shanghai as the weft, woven out of their human life of four generations . The book is to highlight the use of aroma substances in gentry’s family life with luxury, living apart from their daily diet to pursuit meticulous and enjoyment, but also pay attention to be different from others; at that time people lived in Shanghai having industrial and commercial prosperity as well as e rich life and booming technology thatpeople paied much attention to pursuit the beauty of garden and embroidery Furthermore, the book focuses on the deep friendship among women from a family of four generations, where the first wife and the second wife, sisters in law, motherand daughter in law can live in harmony in the same family. Especially when the family declined from flourishing, everyone can support each other by their excellent embroidery craft to help their family livelihoods. This paper analyzes three dimensions from aroma, craft and female friendship. With references to aroma, food culture, historical background and other information, I wish to do more in-depth analysis and provide new perspectives for 'Fragrance'. |
